Genre Categories
Stories that could never happen in real life: magic, spells, talking animals, dragons, made-up worlds, & other strange creatures.
Stories where imagined elements don't exist in the real world: time travel, space travel, set in the future, technological and scientific advances.
Stories that focus on the relationship and romantic love between two people: emotionally satisfying, optimistic ending.
Stories that could actually happen: takes place in present day, normal people as characters, resemble real life, believable setting.
Stories that are set in the past: includes real places and events from history, characters are made up.
Stories that revolve around a main character on a quest to solve a crime (usually a murder or disappearance). Reader is a detective until the end of the story.
Stories that are action-packed, page-turners with moments full of tension, anxiety, and fear: plenty of plot twists and chilling events.
Stories where a sport, sporting event, or athlete is prominently featured in the plot of the book: themes can include; aggression, failure, honor, pride & hope.
Old stories that are still popular: often articulate universal themes like love, morality, death & adversity: a work so "excellent" it becomes a classic.
Stories that are defined by a strong element of danger: features a fast-paced, action-packed plot, usually takes place in exotic, interesting & dangerous locations.
Stories concerned with warfare; typically about naval, air, or land battles - with combat scenes central to the drama. Holocaust involves Nazi Germany.
Stories whose characters are sexually or gender diverse: a novel treats its characters as fully human and their sexuality as one element of that life experience.
"Graphic Novel" is a format, not a genre. Similar to comic books, they use sequential art to tell a story, generally stand-alone stories with more complex plots.
Stories about a crime that actually occurred. Most explore a single event like a kidnapping or murder: explore dark & distressing subject matter and reader discretion is advised.
A true story account of a person's life written by someone else. Generally span a subject's lifetime & include major events that explore their emotional, intellectual, & spiritual lives.
A collection of true or factual books. Organized by the Dewey Decimal System & arranged based on their topic. Present true events & information as accurately as possible.
